Parivartini Ekadashi is also known as Parsva Ekadashi and Vamana Ekadashi. In some regions, an associated festival is known as Dol Gyaras. Names can vary by region and tradition, so follow your local Panchang and customary practices.
Yudhishthira asked Lord Krishna about the name and spiritual significance of the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada. Krishna explained that it is known as Parivartini or Vamana Ekadashi and that its observance is described as highly meritorious.
King Bali was renowned as powerful, generous, and devoted to the Divine. Through his austerities and accumulated merit, he gained dominion over the three worlds, causing the devas to seek the protection of Lord Vishnu.
To protect the devas, Lord Vishnu appeared as Vamana, a young Brahmachari, and approached King Bali during his sacrifice. Vamana asked for only three paces of land. Despite the warning of his guru Shukracharya, Bali accepted the request, honoring his commitment and generosity.
After the promise was made, the Lord assumed the vast Trivikrama form. With the first step He covered the earth and with the second the heavens. When no space remained for the third step, King Bali humbly offered his head, and the Lord placed the third step there.
According to the Vaishnava tradition presented in this account, pleased by Bali's devotion, sacrifice, and humility, Lord Vishnu granted him dominion over Patala and promised to remain near him as a guardian. The tradition also connects Vishnu's turning in Yog Nidra with the name Parivartini.
